Simon the Leper

In Mark 14, we read the following:

Mark 14:3

While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper…

In this text, Jesus was most likely having a meal at "Simon the Leper's" home. Evidently, Simon was actually a healed leper because according to the law, he would have had to be healed of his leprosy in order to host a party. But the thing I find interesting is, even though all evidence points to Simon as being healed at this point, he was, and still is known as "Simon the Leper."

A leper's life was difficult not just because of the leprosy but maybe more so because leprosy was believed to be a curse from God. It was believed during those days that a leper was a leper because of some outrageous sin in their lives and they were under God's judgment. But we also know that when Jesus heals, He heals completely.

So are we guilty of labeling people this way still today? You know what I mean, once a drug addict, once an alcoholic, once an unwed mother, once an illegitimate child, once a divorcee…are they known as a "Simon the leper" forever, even after they give their lives to Jesus and He heals them completely?

Or once a liar, once a thief, once an adulterer…we talk and preach on Sunday's that God can and does forgive completely, and that He can wash away all those labels, but are we, as people, ever guilty of never completely forgetting?

As followers of Jesus, we are called to always receive all those who Jesus receives, completely. God can heal the labels that so many carry around, and if God can heal it, then shouldn't we as followers of His forget that label as well? Love people until they ask you why.

I love you all,
